Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman | *** | A challenging portrait of a young man's journey into mental illness. It's not a picture of his journey out of mental illness, because one of the abiding lessons of the book is that diagnoses like bipolar or schizophrenia are often lifetime appointments to a position you can't retire from. The book does an excellent job illustrating the confusion between reality and faux-reality, and pulls no punches as it addresses the challenges faced by both those in care and their families back home.
