Scythe by Neal Shusterman | **** | The first in a series, Scythe is everything The Hunger Games could have been if it had asked harder questions about the topics it touched. The world of Scythe is a future where all human problems have been solved by a benevolent AI called The Thunderhead — including the problem of death.

However, solving the problem of death only creates the problem of eternal life on a planet that, even in an ideal scenario, can't sustain ever-increasing numbers of immortal humans. Enter Scythedom: a group of people selected to cull the numbers of humanity, maintaining a stable population. This first entry in the series follows Rowan and Citra, two teens selected for Scythe apprenticeship by the wise, stoic Scythe Faraday.

Well worth a read, and when you're done you'll want to pick up Book 2 immediately.
